Patrick’s coming-out story is just the latest representation of LGBTQ life on Schitt’s Creek, which early on established David as a pansexual character; he entered a brief relationship with. But it's the romantic relationship between David (who identifies as pansexual) and Patrick (who is gay) which stands out for lots of fans. "It's completely normalised," says Eliza, "it's a. In a world flooded with media representations of LGBTQ+ relationships that often lean into stereotypes, the Canadian television show "Schitt’s Creek" emerged as a refreshing and impactful portrayal of a same-sex relationship that embraced normalcy over sensationalism.

While Patrick has never had a relationship with a man, David has never had a real romantic relationship with someone who genuinely cared about him. It's finding the balance. You know, all I really can do is think back to a time when I didn't think being myself was ever going to be a possibility. I firmly hold that David and Patrick have one of the best-written and represented queer relationships in modern television.

Although Patrick is not out publicly or even really to himself when his character is introduced, the writers avoid using homophobia to advance the plot. While more openness might have prevented a situation like this from happening in reality, in terms of charming comedic writing it is done in a pretty healthy way. And, yes, I grew up knowing that my parents ultimately would not have a problem with it, but when you're going through that and you're internalizing that much fear you get to a point where you ask yourself, "Well, maybe they will have a problem with it; maybe I'm misreading the situation.

It's all so tricky because we put so much of our time into this show and, for me, it's a month commitment, so it's hard to be open and available to someone in a relationship when my eye will always tend to wander back to the show. In earlier seasons I appreciated how David and Patrick's friendship made it safe for Patrick to leave the pain of the closet and live more honestly in the world.
