That said, there are some awesome LGBTQ+ anime couples that serve as positive representations of their respective communities. Some of these couples are the main characters in their own gay anime shows, whereas some are featured in series that aren't inherently LGBTQ anime. These couples are a big step in the right direction, each slowly but surely helping to normalize LGBTQ+ romance in anime and breaking away from the problematic tropes of the past.
There were some anime couples out there that represented us is different ways and had the romances that we really wanted. In honor of Sailor Moon Crystal getting green-lit for a fourth season, let’s go back to the sweet, terrifying, and heartbreaking LGBT couples from anime’s past. But here I’d like to take a look at some of my favorite depictions of LGBTQ+ characters in anime.
For convenience’s sake, I’ll be including couples along with individuals when possible.
Ryo Asuka. Anime: Devilman: Crybaby. Ryo Asuka isn’t the most likable character by a long shot. Same-sex relationships have been a part of anime stories for a long time. In most shows, we can find one or two characters of the same sex who are in love with each other. Sometimes their portrayal is quite realistic or interesting while other times they are usually used for comic purposes.
They have some truly sweet and sexy moments in the show. The next couple also comes from Sailor Moon , but on the villain side of the spectrum. However, Tokaku instead feels attracted to Haru, and becomes her protector.
In recent years, fans have denounced this controversial couple for the problematic nature of their relationship. Meanwhile, Nezumi lived his whole life in the desolate wastelands, barely scraping by. He mentioned how most of the men on the show had ugly souls due to the school system in place; and how they had abused Anthy and Utena to gain power that they thought was theirs.
All the same, it was the first anime of its genre that I ever watched, so I have a special appreciation for it. The two find solace in each other, but then Mio has to return to the mainland. Through Nezumi, Shion learns the truth of the harsh world they live in and denies his privileged upbringing.
Nezumi has experienced terrible suffering, watching his entire village burn to the ground and barely escaping with his own life. It was highly enjoyable to see their interesting personalities interact, with Haru the sweet and gentle one, and Tokaku the one who is quiet but intense. Utena's princely behavior includes a strong sense of chivalry, which means that when she sees Anthy treated badly, she must step in and protect her.
They've been attached at the hip from the moment they met, and each considers the other to be the most important person in the world to them. Feeling alienated from her friends, she eventually confides in her upperclassman Nanami, who tells her that she feels the same way. Leave a comment Cancel reply. What makes their relationship so great is actually how unremarkable it is.
Tomoka Kase and Yui Yamada have opposite personalities, but that doesn't stop them from falling in love. Their chemistry feels completely natural, and though the two are opposites in a lot of ways, they somehow work perfectly as a team. They even start making mutual decisions about the dragon child who has been living with them as if she's their daughter. Gravitation is one of the old-school pioneers of the BL genre.

The two come from completely different worlds, but Ash and Eiji immediately connect after they meet and form a close bond. Both raised in the Horde to fight against the Princesses of Etheria, Adora plays the protective roll for Catra; as Catra seems to be the failure in the group. The relationship between Yoshikazu Miyano and Shuumei Sasaki is nothing but sugary-sweet, feel-good fun. Even toward the end of season five, it takes an almost similar Revolutionary Girl Utena moment reference episode 39 for them to admit their feelings to each other.
